The rabbit, while a stuffed animal, is favored over all the other toys by a little boy. And while the boy has many toys to choose from, he likes this one best of all. In the story, we see the stuffed animal bunny befriend an old rocking horse who lives in the boy's attic. Close to the end of the book, the wise toy horse talks to the bunny...
The rabbit, being the favorite of the boy's, is chosen to comfort him when he becomes sick with Scarlet Fever. To prevent the sickness from spreading, when the boy recovers they must burn all the things he touched while ill. The favorite stuffed bunny was included. When the garbage man is taking out the trash, he happens to fall out and sits in the grass, unable to move his fake legs.
It isn't long afterwards that we see real bunnies come and surround him, curious as to what he is. A few other things occur, but shortly afterwards, the bunny finds himself able to walk and is because of the boy's love for him was so great, that the velveteen rabbit truly became real. He was loved into existence. Then some time passes and the little boy sees all the real bunnies running around in his yard, only to look at one in particular with loving eyes and remember his beloved Velveteen rabbit.
A few years ago, my sisters bought me a velveteen rabbit necklace that looks identical to the picture above. I wore it for a looooong time, but I had to stop because we were raising up orphaned bunnies and every time I bent down to tend them, the necklace would swing down and bop them. However, this is probably my favorite piece of jewelry. I love rabbits and I loved the story of the Velveteen rabbit, so this necklace was awesome! I would highly recommend it.
