Lion Heads are some of the most popular rabbits for pets (next to Holland Lops). There are a few different types of them. There are Single Maned, Double Maned, and then Teddy Bear Lion Heads. I have owned/do own Single Maned and Double Maned. I have never owned a Teddy Bear Lion Head.
Teddy Bear Lion Heads are basically 'un-showable' Lion Heads. People try and pass them as the "cute Teddy Bears", but if you aren't going to show them, then there's nothing wrong with owning one.
GG |
This is currently my only Single Maned Lion Head. Her name is Grey Girl, so I call her G.G. for short. She's greyish/white with a nice little mane all around her head. I got her in a bunch with 15 others all for free as the owner of them was moving to an apartment and couldn't keep them anymore. GG is old enough to breed, but hasn't been yet. I'm hoping to breed her for the first time with Phantom in a few weeks.
Simba |
Anyway, above is a picture of my first rabbit ever who also happened to be a Single Maned Lion Head. Her name was Simba and she was a great bunny. I would hold her while we watched TV and she was always running around our house exploring. She wasn't the nicest, but I really liked her.
Tasha |
Tasha is one of my newer females. She's a beautiful Tort colored Double Maned Lion Head. She's a little on the shy side, but extremely curious. She likes to run up to the cage and smell my hand, then run to the back of her cage, then come back up and stare at me. She was bred (hopefully successfully with Piccolo this past Monday)
Kizzy |
Kizzy is another fairly new Double Maned Lion Head female. She's very sweet. I'm looking forward to breeding her with Piccolo. She's on the smaller side and so her babies will be absolutely adorable!
MJ |
This is MJ. He's a Single Maned Lion Head. He's been the father of 3 litters now and all with a Giant Rex female. Even though the female wasn't Lion Head and he's only a Single Maned Lion Head, he's had both Single and Double Maned babies in all his litters. He's very sweet and nicely sized.
Phantom |
Now for Phantom. Phantom is a Double Maned Lion Head who has the personality of a grouchy old man. He doesn't like to be pet, or have any changes happen in his cage. He prefers things to stay in their place and to be left alone. He bred with Kayla this past Monday and has always done an extremely nice job at producing large and healthy litters.
Piccolo |
Now for my favorite mini male bunny. Piccolo was my first Lion Head (after Simba) that I got. He's a Double Maned Lion Head. I got him at an Animal Swap which was being hosted by a local Tractor Supply Co. Anyway, since he's a miniature, he was just so small and adorable that I just had to get him! So I convinced my parents to let me buy him. And it was because of him that I had to start getting females so that Piccolo would be useful and breed instead of just sitting around doing nothing. I have never regretted getting him as he is the most adorable thing I've ever laid eyes on. :)
Abbey and Kayla |
This is a double picture. The tan colored one is Abbey. The white and black bunny is Kayla. Both of them are Double Maned Lion Head females. Kayla is unrelated to my other Lion Heads, while Abbey was Olivia and Phantom's daughter. I actually sold Abbey a few months ago. She was too feisty that she would never make a good breeder.
Kayla was just bred with Phantom. I'm excited for her having her litter, because she's an awesome mother! She's had 2 litters before and each time she raised her own along with baby bunnies from other litters who's mothers either died or couldn't feed all of their babies. She's a real sweet heart and I'm so happy I have her.
Olivia |
Above is a picture of Olivia when she was about 10 weeks old. I bought her, Kayla, and Phantom all from the same lady. I bought Olivia and Kayla at the same time to breed with Piccolo. But after an unsuccessful breeding, I though Piccolo was unable to breed. That's why I bought Phantom. But it turns out, Piccolo couldn't breed because it had been too cold.
Anyway, back to Olivia. Olivia had a total of 3 litters. Her first litter was born a week past her due date, causing them all to be still born. Her second litter froze in the winter time. Her third litter was her last and only successful one. However, when the babies were still nursing (about 3 weeks old) Olivia died from a heart attack when a bear went into my rabbitry.
Abbey had been from Olivia's last litter. But while Olivia was alive, she was the evilest rabbit I've ever encountered. She would attack anything and everything. She was afraid of nothing (but the bear) and was not afraid to rid into your flesh. I was actually going to get rid of her after she finished raising up her last litter...but then the bear came and so I didn't have to do that.
Lion Head Bunnies :) |
Above are picture of both Olivia and Kayla's litters. They both had their last litters at the same time and Kayla raised up 3 of Olivia's babies as Olivia abandoned them. However, Abbey and a little boy were the only 2 Olivia didn't abandon. The little boy is in the top right corner, and Abbey is in the bottom left hand corner.
The two in the bottom right were also Olivia's, but they were happily living with Kayla taking full care of them and raising them with her own. So there you go...those are/were my Lion Heads! :)
